About Homestead Hydro

Homestead Hydro covers long-term water systems for rural and transitioning-off-grid properties: wells, storage, filtration, gravity-fed setups, and seasonal rainwater collection. This isn't a site for weekend campers or short-term emergency kits. It's written for people making the actual switch from connected, municipal-everything living to a property where water is something you manage yourself.

Every post here comes out of one working property in the Douglas County foothills of southwestern Oregon, not a lab or a showroom. The mudroom doubles as the water system command center, with pressure gauges taped up at eye level and a hand-drawn map of every pipe, valve, and the well head tacked above the utility sink. The well sits about 140 feet from the house, down a gravel path that turns to mud every November. Under the porch eave, three forty-gallon blue barrels from the very first rain collection attempt are still catching water years later, patched more than once but still running.

Most of what gets written about rural water assumes you already know what you're asking about. This site is the version for people who don't, yet: real costs, real seasonal failures, and specifics on what actually broke and what it took to fix. Nobody behind this site has a permaculture certification or an engineering degree. What we do have is one property, three years of paying close attention, and a habit of writing things down before we forget how badly they went.

Kate Winslow writes and runs the site. Read more about her on the author page.

Off-grid water systems carry real risks, including waterborne illness, contamination, and structural failure when something is built or maintained wrong. Everything here is shared from personal experience for informational purposes only. Test your water, check your local regulations, and bring in a licensed professional for any well, septic, or water system work beyond routine upkeep.
